Hello and Welcome to Women Around the World!

My name is Sue Ellen Bonilla; I am a student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. My major is Public Relations with a minor in sociology along with an International Studies Certificate. I am originally from Honduras, C.A. Thus I speak Spanish.

I have been living in the United States since I was 14 years old. However, any opportunity I find, I travel back to my country to visit family and friends.

There are several things that are of great importance to me in life; and it all revolves around family, friends and on the daily help received from a divine being; I am not certain who she or he is, however, I feel the divine protection at all times. All I know is that there is heaven above!

Through my personal experience; spending 14 years of my life in a third world country and thus far 10 years in what is currently the most preponderant country in the world I have learned very much.

I have learned that values are different from place to place; I have learned to assimilate in to a new culture. I learned a new language and have learned at least one thing from all the different people that have come to know in this melting pot (U.S.). I have learned of racism. I have learned about the affirmative action, and although I value education and try to be an excellent citizen of this country, I have learned that this may not be enough because I am considered a minority.

However, I have also learned the first amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

The amendment gives me and everyone else the right and power to be active on raising our voice and let it be heard. This is valuable; although I do not consider this nation perfect I am glad to live in a democracy and every day there are people like me that strive for equality.

Favorite Quotes:

We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.

We were born to manifest the glory of God that is within us. All of us.

And as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

"Latin America is very fond of the word "hope." We like to be called the "continent of hope." Candidates for deputy, senator, president, call themselves "candidates of hope." This hope is really something like a promise of heaven, an IOU whose payment is always being put off. It is put off until the next legislative campaign, until next year, until the next century."
Pablo Neruda (1904-1973), Chilean poet. Memoirs, ch. 11 (1974, trans. 1977).
